La formación liderada por Grant Stewart y Fabio Miano, cuenta como sidemans al baterista austriaco Bernd Reiter y al joven contrabajista francés Clément Daldosso. Combo formado por músicos precoces y con recorrido para alcanzar las mayores cotas de excelencia. El cuarteto, de sólido background, rueda con soltura por el mainstream pero sin acomodarse. Stewart, brillante saxo tenor con poderoso swing incisivo que busca más y mejor expresividad, es figura cotizada en la escena internacional. Con 18 grabaciones como líder y elogiado por Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Clark Terry y Jimmy Cobb, con quienes ha tocado y grabado. Nada más que añadir….
Fabio Miano, admirado pianista y jazzteacher es un fino estilista del “comping”y excelente improvisador. Italiano de origen, formado en Canadá, Bruselas y residente en Alicante, conocedor del jazz en ambos lados del Atlántico, posee un lenguaje global y contemporáneo, un tempo sereno, un discurso sólido, complejo y lleno de matices. Miano tiene una discografía muy escasa, pero con grabaciones de mucho interés.
La cómplice empatía entre los líderes fundamenta esta estupenda grabación. En ese contexto la creatividad aflora con naturalidad, con transiciones suaves, no hay liderazgo imperativo y el Jazz mana con gozosa fluidez.
Namely You (De Paul/Mercer 1956) abre y titula el disco, Stewart con pericia se acerca a Sonny Rollins, uno de sus referentes. Miano hace un solo chispeante con aromas de Kenny Barron. Daldosso traza un solo sobrio y literal.
Straight Street (Coltrane 1957) Stewart fiel al original coltraniano incluye un guiño a Ipanema, que Miano retoma en su solo. Sobre el walking bass, Reiter teje un sobrio y vibrante“fill out”
Laura (Raskin/Mercer 1944) Stewart se aproxima a Dexter Gordon, majestuoso sonido con pausa y notas largas. Miano en un delicado y expresivo solo, rememora a Errol Garner.
Amsterdam after dark (G. Coleman 1978) Stewart obvia la intro, ataca la melodía con largas y tupidas frases y un solo muy Coleman. Miano, muy McCoy al inicio, pronto se desliza mediante “tumbaos” a latitudes más cálidas.
I Believe in You (F. Loesser 1961) y Somewhere in the Night (W. May 1960) Swing a raudales con Stewart omnipresente, Miano muy fluido y Reiter muy solvente con un energético solo y dinámicos “trade fours”
The Shadow of Your Smile (Webster/Mandel 1965) standard entre standards, un verdadero reto que afrontan con respeto, literalidad y profundo sentimiento, de nuevo al estilo D. Gordon.
By Miself (Dietz/Schwartz 1937) Cierra el disco este estupendo tema. Stewart con naturalidad, brillante y locuaz, Miano polivalente con un vistoso solo ChickCoreano, Daldosso robusto y fiable. Reiter, asombroso, propulsa un formidable solo que explica el porqué de su concurrida agenda.Un disco de Jazz con mayúsculas, jazz directo y potente para disfrutarlo en escucha activa. Muy asequible para el neófito y de mucho calado para el aficionado deseoso de descubrir los numerosos guiños que contiene.

Grant Stewart and Fabio Miano lead a swinging quartet that includes Austrian drummer Bernd Reiter and the young French double bassist Clement Daldosso. The group moves easily through the tunes on this recording. Stewart , a brilliant tenor saxophonist with a powerful, incisive swing is an esteemed figure on the international scene. He has been praised by many great musicians, such as Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Clark Terry and Jimmy Cobb, with whom he has played and recorded.
Fabio Miano, acclaimed pianist and jazz teacher, is a fine accompanist and skillful improviser. Italian Miano, who lives in Spain, has performed on both sides of the Atlantic and displays a knowledge of contemporary jazz as well as a solid grounding in jazz tradition. His tasteful, narrative playing is filled with nuances.
The empathy between the two leaders helps to create a relaxed recording in which creativity is not restricted and jazz flows with joyful ease.
Namely You (Paul and Mercer 1956) opens and gives the title to this album. Stewart draws skillfully close to Sonny Rollins, one of his influences, and Miano takes a sparkling solo with Kenny Barron touches while Daldosso makes a tasteful contribution. Straight Street (Coltrane 1957) brings Stewart back to the Coltranian original, nods to Ipanema, and Miano responds with his own touch. Rolling over the walking bass, Reiter creates a vibrant «fill out». Laura (Raskin & Mercer 1944) Stewart hints at Dexter Gordon – a majestic sound with pauses and long notes. Miano, in a delicate and expressive solo, recalls Errol Garner. Amsterdam After Dark (G. Coleman 1978) Stewart skips the intro, moving on to the melody with long and deep phrasing and a positively Coleman-like solo. Miano starts ‘a la’ McCoy, and soon slides through «tumbaos» to warmer latitudes. I Believe in You (F. Loesser 1961) and Somewhere in the Night (W. May 1960) have swing in abundance with Stewart omnipresent. Miano,very fluid, and Reiter with dynamic solos’ trade fours. The Shadow of Your Smile (Webster / Mandel 1965). A standard “par excellence”, a real challenge that they approach with respect, truth and deep feeling, again in the Gordon style. By Myself (Dietz / Schwartz 1937) Stewart plays bright and talkative, while the versatile Miano displays a colourful Chick Corean style solo, and Daldosso plays robustly and true while Reiter contributes with an amazing solo.
This is a JAZZ album with capital letters. It provides straight- ahead, powerful jazz, accessible to the newcomer as well as to the experienced connoisseur looking to discover the many and varied nuances it offers.
